Roulette Rules

Most gamblers are familiar with basic roulette rules. Players bet on the outcome of a spin of the roulette wheel—which number, set of numbers or color do they think the ball will land on? If they guess correctly they are paid. If not, they lose their bet. However, if you are thinking about playing roulette in a live or online casino it is important to familiarize yourself with more advanced roulette rules. Understanding these rules will help you to choose a roulette game with good player odds and increase your chances of winning.

There are two types of roulette wheel—the American roulette wheel and the European roulette wheel. The roulette rules played on these wheels are the same. However, the European roulette wheel has 37 slots numbered from 0 through 16 while the American wheel has an additional 00 slot. The house advantage is significantly lower on a European wheel, so if you have the opportunity you should always choose European.

In roulette, players place bets in the form of chips on the roulette table. Roulette rules assign specific payouts to each type of bet:
- Even money bets are placed on odds, evens, high numbers, low numbers, red or black and pay 1:1
- Bets on columns or 12 numbers pay 2:1
- 6-number bets pay 5:1
- 4-number bets, known as “corner bets”, pay 8:1
- 3-number bets, known as “street bets”, pay 11:1
- 2-number bets, known as “split bets”, pay 17:1
- Betting on a single number pays 35:1
Of course, the higher the payout the lower the odds. Therefore, newbies may want to stick to even money bets.

There are several roulette rules that decrease the house’s advantage. If you can play with these rules then you should. The Surrender rule, or La Partage, allows players to keep half of their bet if they lose when a 0 is spun. The En Prison rule allows players to keep their bet on the board for a second spin if 0 is spun, keeping their bet “in prison” for a second chance. Both of these roulette rules can increase your chances of winning.

Now that you are familiar with roulette rules you are ready to head to a live casino or play roulette in a casino online.
